Last fall I was doing some consulting work for a local contractor — auditing their online presence, cleaning up their Google Business Profile, the usual stuff. Part of that work involved researching the competitive landscape: who else shows up when homeowners search for services in Conway?
That’s when I fell down a rabbit hole I wasn’t expecting.
The Deck Builder Problem
I typed deck builders Conway into Google Maps. One result came up. One — for an entire city.
The listing showed a website and a phone number, which looked promising. Except the phone number was disconnected. And when I clicked the website link, my browser blocked it with a security warning — flagged as malicious.
So I switched to regular Google Search and tried the same query. The page filled up with results. Problem solved, right? Not quite. Mixed in with the legitimate deck builders were fence contractors, general handymen, and home improvement companies that happened to have the word “deck” buried somewhere on their site. Finding an actual deck specialist took real digging.
For a homeowner who just wants to get a few bids on a summer project, that’s a frustrating twenty minutes they didn’t plan to spend.
Why This Happens
Here’s what I’ve learned doing local marketing for small businesses in Arkansas: a lot of contractors don’t list all their services online. A guy who builds beautiful decks might have a Google profile that just says “general contractor.” His website, if he has one, might not mention decks at all. He gets referrals by word of mouth and doesn’t think much about how he shows up in search.
That’s great for him — until a homeowner two miles away can’t find him.
Google Maps is also genuinely useful, but it’s built around proximity and quick decisions. It’s perfect when you need someone right now — a plumber on a Sunday, an HVAC tech in August. But when you’re planning a project, comparing options, and trying to get three solid bids? The “nearest available” result isn’t always the right starting point.
What We Built Instead
AR Local Pros is a curated directory of home service contractors across Conway and Central Arkansas, ranked by one thing: Google review count.
Not pay-to-play placement. Not who paid for a featured listing. Review count — because the number of reviews a contractor has earned is the closest thing to a real signal of how many Conway homeowners have actually hired them and taken the time to say so.
We show the star rating too, because 500 reviews at 3.8 stars tells a different story than 12 reviews at 4.9. Both numbers matter and we show both.
We also audit each listing for something most directories ignore: whether the contractor actually has a working web presence. Each business is marked as having a full website, a Facebook page only, or no web presence at all. If a phone number is disconnected or a listing is clearly abandoned, it doesn’t make the list.
The goal is simple — when you’re ready to get bids on a fence, a new deck, a roof inspection, or an AC tune-up, you can open AR Local Pros and see who’s actually active, established, and reachable in your area. We recommend getting at least three quotes on any significant home project, and this makes that process a lot faster.
Starting in Conway, Growing from Here
We launched with eight categories covering the most common summer home projects in Conway and Central Arkansas — deck builders, fence companies, roofing, HVAC & AC repair, tree services, painters, pressure washing, and handyman services. Rankings are based on current Google Maps data and updated monthly.
We launched in Conway and are actively adding coverage for Benton and Cabot next — both are natural fits given how many Central Arkansas homeowners cross county lines for contractors anyway. Hot Springs and Northwest Arkansas are on the roadmap after that. (Northwest Arkansas is its own project given how many cities are up there — we want to do it right.) If there’s a category or city you’d like to see, reach out — we’re building this based on what Central Arkansas homeowners actually need.
And if you’re a contractor who wants to make sure your listing is accurate, add a current deal, or understand where you stand in local search — we want to hear from you too.
